This appointment makes Lucia Witbooi the 18th female African vice president after Ghana’s Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang who was sworn in January this year and many others.

Throughout history, political leadership in Africa has largely been male-dominated. However, in recent decades, the continent has witnessed a gradual but significant shift toward gender inclusivity in governance.

Women have increasingly assumed high political offices, including the presidency and vice presidency, challenging historical barriers and reshaping the political landscape.

Just like President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, many have even ascended to the highest office, serving as Presidents in countries like Liberia and Tanzania.

Lucia Witbooi’s appointment as Namibia’s Vice President

Namibia’s first female President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, was sworn in on March 21, 2025, and announced her cabinet on March 22, 2025.

The new cabinet comprises 14 ministers and seven deputies, with a notable representation of women in key positions.

Namibia is the only African nation with both a female president and vice president.

Lucia Witbooi’s appointment as Namibia’s Vice President on March 22, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s political landscape.

Serving under President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Witbooi’s appointment contributes to Namibia’s distinction as the first African country to have both a female president and vice president simultaneously.

Prior to her vice presidency, she was elected to Namibia’s National Assembly in 2009 and served as a teacher..

Her academic credentials include a Higher Diploma in Education from the University of Port Elizabeth, a Diploma in Education from Azaliah College for Further and Higher Education, and a Higher Primary Education Certificate from the University of Namibia.

In her new role, Vice President Witbooi is expected to play a crucial part in assisting President Nandi-Ndaitwah in executing governmental functions and overseeing the implementation of development programs.

Her appointment is part of a broader initiative to streamline Namibia’s cabinet, reducing the number of ministers and deputies to enhance efficiency and reduce expenditure.

Her appointment also reflects Africa’s shift toward a more inclusive culture that empowers young girls to envision broader horizons in politics.

It highlights the transition from a male-dominated political landscape to a more balanced and equitable arena where both genders can thrive and contribute meaningfully to building a more just and progressive society.
