The tie has a unique way of enhancing one’s stature and appearance, exuding confidence, and commanding respect.

This simple accessory has transcended generations, standing as a testament to refined style and professionalism.

It’s ability to effortlessly elevate an outfit, be it a tailored suit or a smart-casual ensemble, exudes a sense of class and attention to detail.

Whether you’re attending a formal event or simply dressing up for the office, knowing the proper tie etiquette is essential.

Wearing a tie is not just about choosing the right colour and pattern, but also about understanding the rules that govern its proper usage.

Here are seven tie etiquette rules that every man should follow to maintain a sophisticated appearance:

  1. Match the tie width to the lapel width: The width of your tie should be proportionate to the width of your suit lapel. Generally, it is recommended to have the tie width match the lapel width for a balanced look. Slim ties work well with narrow lapels, while wider ties complement broader lapels.
  2. Choose an appropriate tie length: The tip of your tie should ideally reach the middle of your belt buckle or waistband. A tie that is too short or too long can appear unprofessional and untidy.
  3. Ensure a proper knot: Tie your tie in a well-executed knot. The classic and versatile knots include the Windsor, Half-Windsor, and Four-in-Hand. Practice tying knots until you can achieve a neat, symmetrical, and secure result.
  4. Coordinate colors and patterns: Select ties that complement your outfit and follow color coordination principles. Choose a tie color that harmonizes with your shirt, suit, and accessories. Consider the patterns as well, making sure they don’t clash with other elements of your attire.
  5. Use a tie clip or bar: A tie clip or bar can add a polished touch to your appearance while keeping your tie neatly in place. Position it between the third and fourth buttons of your dress shirt, securing both the tie and the placket together.
  6. Properly untie your tie: At the end of the day, untie your tie with care. Gently reverse the process of tying your knot to avoid wrinkling or damaging the fabric. Avoid pulling the narrow end of the tie forcefully through the knot, as it may cause damage.
  7. Store your ties properly: Hang your ties on a tie rack or a hanger designed specifically for ties to maintain their shape and prevent wrinkles. Avoid cramming them into drawers or leaving them in a heap, as this can lead to unnecessary creases.

Remember, adhering to tie etiquette rules contributes to a sophisticated and polished appearance. By following these guidelines, you can elevate your overall style and make a lasting impression.
