Brown, who has been serving as the acting ambassador, formally stepped down, as confirmed in a letter sent by the U.S. government to South African authorities.

Bloomberg reports that Brown, who had been serving as acting Chief of Mission in the absence of an ambassador, will be replaced by a new diplomat expected to arrive in South Africa on March 14.

Dana M. Brown was appointed as Deputy Chief of Mission in August 2024 and assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires in January 2025 following the retirement of U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben E. Brigety II.

Her resignation comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and South Africa, though no official reason has been stated for her departure.

Tensions rise in South Africa-U.S. relations

Dana Brown’s resignation as Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. in South Africa comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Pretoria and Washington, reportedly linked to South Africa’s policies.

Although no direct link has been established between Brown’s resignation and the ongoing crisis between the two countries, her departure at this time may suggest further strain in their relations.

Relations between the two countries have been strained, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump accused South Africa of confiscating land from White farmers.

The South African government has repeatedly denied these allegations, stating that no private land has been seized since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The diplomatic rift was further evident at the recent G20 meeting, where U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio was expected to attend but did not.

Instead, the U.S. was represented by Dana Brown, reinforcing concerns over Washington’s disengagement.

In response to the strained relations and subsequent U.S. aid cuts, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed willingness to resolve the issues, signaling an openness to diplomatic engagement.

Ramaphosa expressed his desire to ease tensions with the U.S. following former President Donald Trump’s recent executive order.

“We don’t want to go and explain ourselves. We want to go and do a meaningful deal with the United States on a whole range of issues,” Ramaphosa stated, highlighting his commitment to fostering a positive relationship with Trump.
