General Atomics and CAE have partnered to develop the next-generation mission trainer for the MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone.

The deal will last 5 years and includes 11 mission trainers and up to 50 devices designed to enhance the training capabilities of MQ-9B operators.

Under the contract, CAE will integrate advanced visualization technology to create a realistic training environment.

The mission trainer will use the CAE Prodigy Image Generator, which provides high-fidelity graphics, high-resolution 3D content, and physics-based modeling to simulate flight operations.

Featuring a state-of-the-art gaming engine, CAE Prodigy is compatible with various display systems, including direct projection and head-mounted displays, making training scenarios more immersive and improving skill transfer to real-life operations.

The mission trainer initiative is part of “Team SkyGuardian Canada,” a program supporting collaboration and investment between General Atomics and Canadian businesses.

The program started in 2023 after Ottawa selected the MQ-9B SkyGuardian under a $1.72-billion procurement.

The MQ-9B is an advanced aircraft capable of automatic takeoffs and landings.

It supports intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions and is equipped with a Lynx Multi-mode radar and an advanced electro-optical/infrared sensor.

The SkyGuardian has a wingspan of 79 feet (24 meters) and a top external payload capacity of 4,750 pounds (2,155 kilograms).

It has been procured in Europe by Belgium and Poland, with Asian customers in Taiwan, India, and Japan.

Moreover, the aircraft support the US Air Force and Navy and UK Royal Air Force operations.
