Ethiopia’s Tigray region leaders have urged the African Union to ensure the complete implementation of the Pretoria peace accord that ended the conflict between Tigray rebels and the federal government. Signed in November 2022, the deal directed a cessation of hostilities, return of displaced civilians, disarmament, and restoration of services. Despite launching a disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration program (DDR), Tigray officials say key components remain unmet. They ask for the withdrawal of non-ENDF forces, namely Eritrean and Amhara region forces, and the return of occupied territories. Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gedion Timothewos pledged adherence to the agreement, reiterating that it occurs in the manner specified in the agreement. Meanwhile, the AU mediator urged a phased resolution to the DDR program and territorial disputes.
