The Colombian Air Force (FAC) is evaluating the potential inclusion of the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB3 drone into its fleet in an ongoing effort to modernize its capabilities.

High-ranking FAC officials reportedly traveled to Ankara to assess the operational capabilities of the long-endurance drone and determine whether it aligns with the country’s strategic needs.

As part of its modernization, the FAC is exploring options to upgrade its unmanned aerial systems (UAS) fleet, transitioning away from its current Israeli-made Hermes 900 and 450 drones.

While the visit does not guarantee an agreement, the Bayraktar TB3 is considered a strong contender for the FAC, given its ability to support advanced intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision targeting missions.

About the TB3 Drone

First flown in October 2023, the Bayraktar TB3 is considered one of the most advanced UAS globally.

It builds on the success of the Bayraktar TB2, featuring significant upgrades including a higher operational altitude (20,000 feet/6,096 meters) and extended flight endurance (21 hours).

Powered by a PD170 turbo-diesel engine, the TB3 can reach speeds of up to 296 kilometers (184 miles) per hour and has a range of over 1,000 nautical miles (1,852 kilometers/1,150 miles).

Designed for operation aboard aircraft carriers, the TB3 is equipped with foldable wings, enabling short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities.

Unlike its predecessor, the TB3 has not yet been adopted by foreign militaries, although Indonesia recently signed a deal to procure 60 units.
