Amid tensions stemming from US sanctions over South Africa’s controversial land reform policies, the nation has received robust backing from both the European Union and China. European leaders, such as EU President António Costa and ambassadors from Germany, Italy, and France, expressed solidarity, emphasizing shared commitments to equality and justice with South Africa. The EU member states – France, Germany, and Italy – reiterated their commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, and equality, affirming South Africa’s sovereignty and leadership in the G20. Concurrently, China’s ambassador reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to deepening bilateral trade ties with Pretoria, signaling support. He highlighted the strong trade ties between both countries, noting that China-South Africa trade reached $52.5 billion in 2024. President Trump’s decision to sanction South Africa, cutting aid needed for crucial health programs, followed accusations that the country is implementing racist land policies. Pretoria has denied these claims.
