Two prominent Afrikaner groups – Solidarity and AfriForum – have firmly rejected President Donald Trump’s proposal offering white South Africans refugee status and resettlement in the US. Instead, the groups’ leaders asserted their commitment to remain in South Africa and “build a future” there. Trump’s proposal was part of an executive order that halted aid to Pretoria as punishment for alleged “rights violations” against white citizens. As justification for his actions, the US president claimed the country’s new land expropriation law unjustly targets Afrikaner farmers. However, the South African government has denied any such targeted oppression, emphasizing that the legislation aims to address historical injustices from apartheid. With whites comprising only 7% of the population yet owning about 70% of the country’s farmland, critics argue that portraying Afrikaners as oppressed is misleading.
