Congo’s eastern city of Goma is under siege as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels escalate their advance, causing widespread fear and humanitarian devastation. The rebels, who claim to have captured the city, have triggered intense fighting, worsening what is already a dire humanitarian crisis. Explosions and gunfire have disrupted Goma, a regional hub housing millions, while critical infrastructure like roads and the airport remain unusable. Shelling has also struck hospitals, killing civilians and worsening the plight of the injured. International condemnation has mounted against Rwanda, though Kigali denies supporting the rebels. Instead, Rwanda blames Congo for the recent escalation. Kigali argues that its “sustained defensive posture” was necessitated by Congo’s failure to fulfill past peace agreements. Meanwhile, protests have erupted in Kinshasa, with opposition leader Martin Fayulu criticizing President Félix Tshisekedi’s response to the crisis.
