Donald Trump’s second term as US president presents a complex landscape for Africa. While some Africans are optimistic that his new administration will strengthen partnerships with African nations and influence more of them to align with conservative values, including adopting more conservative stances on LGBTQ+ policies, others remain skeptical of his commitment to the continent. Critics cite Trump’s limited engagement with Africa during his first term and controversial immigration policies as evidence of his disinterest in engaging with the continent. Trump’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) following his return is another concern, potentially weakening Africa’s healthcare systems that rely on WHO support for crises like Ebola and COVID-19. Trade relations could also face challenges, with Trump showing little interest in extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which has benefited many of the continent’s nations.
