Crime is a daily reality for many residents in African cities, with some urban centres facing higher rates of violence and theft than others.

If you have ever visited a major African city, you might have observed the stark contrast between the vibrant energy of the city and the underlying security concerns that come with rapid growth and urbanization.

While some cities are grappling with rising crime rates, others have managed to improve safety. Across the continent, crime varies widely, ranging from petty theft to more serious issues like gang violence and organized crime.

Pietermaritzburg in South Africa has earned the dubious distinction of having the highest crime index in Africa, with a rating of 82.0, ranking it 1st globally according to Numbeo.

Last year, South Africa dominated the top spots, holding the top five positions for the highest crime rates. In the latest rankings, six cities from South Africa still feature prominently, reflecting the ongoing security challenges faced by the country.

Following closely behind is Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, which has also been grappling with crime-related issues.

In these environments, crimes such as theft, armed robbery, carjacking, and violent assault are prevalent. Organized crime, often linked to drug trafficking, gangs, and corruption, is also a significant concern in some of these urban centres.

The impact of crime in African cities is not just limited to public safety but also affects economic development and foreign investment. Cities plagued by high crime rates may struggle to attract the kind of investment needed to create jobs and stimulate growth, which in turn exacerbates poverty and unemployment, further fueling the cycle of crime.
