Macron claimed that Sahel nations, struggling with civil unrest and extremism, owe their sovereignty to the presence of French forces.
He also dismissed assertions that French troops were expelled from the Sahel region, which encompasses several nations south of the Sahara Desert.
What Macron said
On January 6, 2025, during the Conference of Ambassadors at the Elysée Palace, Macron outlined France’s current stance on Africa, addressing its role in the region’s security challenges and its financial position in the continent.
Macron also praised France’s international and military efforts and thanked ambassadors for their dedication.
“We had a security relationship. It was in two folds: One was our commitment against terrorism since 2013. I think someone forgot to say thank you. It does not matter, it will come with time,”
“Ingratitude, I am well placed to know, is a disease not transmissible to man. I say it for all African leaders who did not have the courage vis-à-vis their public opinions to carry it, none of them would be today with a sovereign country if the French army had not deployed in this region.” Macron said
African leaders respond
Chad’s Foreign Minister, Abderaman Koulamallah, criticized Macron’s remarks, stating they revealed his contempt for Africa, according to the BBC.
“Chad expresses its deep concern following the remarks made recently by [the French president], which reflect a contemptuous attitude towards Africa and Africans,” he said in a statement on national TV.
“French leaders must learn to respect the African people and recognize the value of their sacrifices.” he added.
Speaking also, Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, stated that France had previously contributed to the destabilization of certain African nations, such as Libya, leading to “disastrous consequences” for regional security.
“France has neither the capacity nor the legitimacy to ensure Africa’s security and sovereignty,” he said in a statement.
France’s waning influence in Africa
France has been involved in military operations in the Sahel region since 2013, with its Operation Barkhane aimed at combating terrorist groups.
However, the operation has faced criticism and resistance from local populations, leading to a reevaluation of France’s military presence in the region.
Several countries, including Chad, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, have terminated their security agreements with France.
Meanwhile, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have taken a more drastic step by ordering French troops to leave their territories following recent coups.
This shift is largely driven by accusations of neo-colonialism and exploitative relationships between France and its former colonies.
As a result, some countries are seeking alternative partnerships.
For instance, the junta-led governments in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have begun to foster closer ties with Russia after France’s withdrawal.
This changing landscape marks a significant decline in France’s post-colonial military dominance in the Sahel region.
