Negotiations between Mauritius and the UK over the Chagos Islands’ sovereignty have stalled, with Mauritius’ Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger hinting at disagreements over financial terms as the reason. Under the original agreement, announced in October, the UK would transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while maintaining a 99-year lease for Diego Garcia, a key UK-US military base situated on the island. However, the new Mauritian government, elected last month, has called for revisions to the deal, citing concerns over monetary offers and national sovereignty. The deal has also faced criticism in the UK, with members of the opposition Conservative party arguing it risks national security and ignores Chagossian interests. Despite criticism, the UK insists the deal ensures long-term security for the military base.
