Mozambique stands on edge as the constitutional council prepares to rule on October’s contested election results, which have sparked deadly protests and disrupted the economy. Opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, claiming electoral fraud, has urged supporters to demand justice. He warned of “chaos” if the constitutional council rules in favor of the ruling party’s candidate Daniel Chapo, who reportedly won with 70.7% of the vote. The election was marred by allegations of discrepancies, including by the country’s Catholic bishops, who claimed that ballot-stuffing took place. Besides this, EU observers noted irregularities in vote counting and unjustified result alterations. Ahead of the judgment, Mondlane continues to rally supporters from an undisclosed location abroad, urging peaceful prayers but hinting at nationwide disruptions. While Mondlane claims to have won the election, analysts argue that no clear evidence supports his claims.
