The Smithsonian Looks at How the Slave Trade Shaped the World

While the painful history of slavery has been presented in a vast number of museum exhibits, a new one at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture is taking a slightly different approach. Called ‘In Slavery’s Wake,’ it aims to illustrate the worldwide impact of the slave trade. While the enormity of the topic can frequently overwhelm people, the museum has taken efforts to present the history in ways that allow visitors to process both the human toll, as well as the geopolitical reshaping of the world.
