The United Nations is convening a new meeting of Libyan experts to revive the country’s delayed national elections, which were initially scheduled for December 2021. According to Stephanie Koury, the acting head of the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMI), the experts will focus on resolving contentious electoral law issues and creating a clear governance framework to guide the process. The elections were stalled due to disputes over the eligibility of key candidates, and the UN-backed political process has faltered since then. Libya is governed by two rival administrations, one based in the east and the other in the west of the country. A successful election would unify the country under a single government, military, and cohesive state institutions, resolving the political deadlock that has plagued it for over a decade.
