Rwandan President Paul Kagame has officially announced the country’s bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, marking a significant step toward bringing F1 to Africa for the first time since 1993. Speaking at the FIA prize-giving ceremony in Kigali, Kagame stated that Rwanda is approaching the “opportunity with the seriousness and commitment which it deserves.” Kigali’s effort aligns with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali’s vision of expanding the sport to Africa, with Kagame revealing that discussions are progressing well. In his speech, Kagame emphasized the importance of offering all countries, regardless of income level, a fair chance to host major sporting events, urging a shift away from outdated biases. While plans are progressing, the race has not yet been confirmed on future F1 calendars. Nevertheless, optimism remains high for Africa’s motorsport resurgence.
