The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration has contracted Saab to deliver the Sea Giraffe 1X radar system to the Swedish Navy.

The 340-million Swedish kroner ($31 million) contract will be delivered through 2026.

It includes the Sea Giraffe 1X naval radar system in different configurations for training as well as deployment on surface vessels.

“Sea Giraffe 1X will contribute in protecting coastal and littoral areas and strengthen the naval units with advanced capabilities to detect, track and classify threats in the air and on the surface,” head of Saab’s business area Surveillance Carl-Johan Bergholm said.

Sea Giraffe 1X

The multipurpose radar operates in X-band and offers comprehensive electronic Counter-Countermeasure capabilities

It provides simultaneous detection of both surface and air targets, including low-observable sea-skimming missiles.

According to Saab, the Sea Giraffe can maintain this capability even in an acutely cluttered litoral environment.

Light Weight

The radar provides accurate 3D data for all air targets every second and is capable of distinguishing between fixed wing, rotary-wing, and surface targets.

The system weighs only 150 kilograms (331 pounds), making it suitable for small vessels and a radar complement on large ships.

The combined multi-sensor solution of rotating Sea Giraffe 1X and fixed-face Sea Giraffe 4A radars provides hypersonic detection and tracking and counter-drone capabilities against small drones.

The Sea Giraffe 4A is a naval long-range AESA S-band multifunction radar.
