Nigeria’s Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has revealed plans to expand the country’s national grid by 150MW before year-end, leveraging progress in the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). Speaking after a meeting between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Adelabu stated that 80% of the pilot phase, including the installation of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations, has been completed. Adelabu claimed that the upgrade has already increased the transmission grid capacity by 750MW, contributing to relative grid stability. The minister assured Nigerians that Phase One of the project would improve the grid’s reliability. He, however, stated that a total revamp of the country’s grid is essential to ensure stability going forward. While ongoing upgrades aim to address systemic issues, challenges like aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and limited capacity in power generation and distribution continue to disrupt the nation’s electricity supply, impacting households and industries.
