According to data sourced from Statisense, in 2023, Nigeria imported armoured vehicles worth $8.54 billion from Singapore and $3.68 million from the United States.

Nigeria’s security landscape is one of the most complex in Africa, shaped by a combination of terrorism in the North-East, herder-farmer clashes, rising kidnappings in the North West, and separatist tensions in the South-East.

Nigeria’s focus on acquiring AFVs and tanks is part of a broader effort to enhance its defence infrastructure. These vehicles, designed for superior protection and firepower, play a critical role in ground operations.

They are instrumental in neutralizing threats posed by insurgents, particularly in regions like the Northeast, where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have maintained a presence.

In Nigeria’s import expenditure on armoured vehicles, N5.06 trillion on the importation of armoured vehicles significantly surpassed that on fuel in the final quarter of 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

By investing in modern armoured assets, Nigeria aims to increase the mobility and survivability of its troops during high-stakes missions. Armoured vehicles, including tanks, offer enhanced protection against small arms fire, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other battlefield threats, allowing troops to operate more effectively in hostile environments.
