Rheinmetall and Auterion have partnered to develop software-based components that support interoperability for unmanned aerial, land, and naval drones.

The agreement between the two companies includes product development and platform sales.

Timo Haas, Chief Digital Officer at Rheinmetall AG, explained that with over 200 existing systems on complex battlefields like Ukraine, military training for operating different platforms and software has become costly and time-consuming.

“With our approach, there will be no need for system-dependent user training or system-specific integration into an overall system network in the future,” said Haas.

The CEO of Auterion, Lorenz Meier, stated that the current prospects for future combat and defense scenarios foresee a further increase in the use of drones, making it a priority to harmonize platforms with common operating systems.

Auterion Operating Systems

Auterion already developed software dubbed AuterionOS for integrating autonomous sensors, payloads, and applications across various vehicles.

“AuterionOS allows the customer to combine all drones on a common basis and to integrate different manufacturers into a common architecture,” explained Meier.

By connecting robotics and autonomous systems, AuterionOS functions as a plug-and-play solution.

Rheinmetall Drones

Rheinmetall develops various types of drones that are widely used in many environments.

The company stated that it will base its work in cooperation with Auterion on its previous experiences developing the Luna NG (new generation) and Aladin systems.

In 2023, the company secured a contract to supply its Luna drone systems to the German Armed Forces for real-time reconnaissance operations. The same drones were also provided to Ukraine via Berlin.
