As Ghana approaches its December 7 election, key voter concerns include economic hardship, public debt, unemployment, and natural resource management. Much like the rest of the world, the country has struggled with inflation, which has driven up the cost of staples like eggs and tomatoes and pushed many into poverty. Compounding these economic struggles, public debt has also soared in the West African nation, resulting in a debt repayment default in 2022. Beyond these, unemployment has steadily risen, affecting 14.7% of the workforce. It is particularly severe among the nation’s youth, with about 30% without a job. Voters will also have the country’s gold-mining issues on their minds. While Ghana remains Africa’s largest gold producer, concerns about environmental damage from illegal mining persist. These issues will undoubtedly play a role in who voters cast their ballots for. Results are expected within three days.
