Government Launches A Plan To Accelerate Gender Parity Within Institutions
The Office of the Presidential Advisor on Women Rights led by Hon. Harriette Chiggai has today launched a strategic plan to accelerate gender parity within all spheres of influence to help achieve gender equality agenda.
Sexual and gender-based violence for women and children is on the rise and women have been violated and discriminated against.
The cases of violence against children – teenage pregnancy, early marriages and neglect are alarming. If they are not collectively addressed, the country’s economy will forever remain unstable.
Speaking during the launch of the Strategic Direction of the Office of Women Rights Advisor (ORWA) to the president in Nairobi, Chiggai underscored that the reported femicide cases in the last three months is about 97 with the oldest woman to be violated being 83 years old and the youngest being 5 months old.
“In addressing the issues mentioned , we have outlined four strategic pillars namely: Women economic empowerment and investment; Leadership and democratic participation; Social and legal justice; and Research and data.” Notes Chiggai
“It is not possible for the Government or one partner to address all these alone. For us to realise meaningful change, we need concerted efforts and support from various partners to consolidate our gains and resources. Scaling up and putting together national initiatives”
Chaggai also noted that the Kenya police paused a gap in the fight against GBV stating,
“The Kenya Police, that is where we have a big gap because how do the Kenya Police receive GBV cases. How do they process the cases and how do we get these cases to court,” she said.
Echoing her sentiments was The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Boss Shollei who underscored that the police force are the most horrible people to report concerning matters of domestic and Gender-Based Violence.
“On GBV, I think our biggest leak is our Police Force. They are the most horrible people that you can go to report domestic violence or Gender-Based Violence,” said Shollei.
She further challenged women to strive to be involved in decision making positions despite the parties therein.
“They will not let us go to the Frontline. We must do something about it,” she said.
Chiggai has urged everyone to unite and create Safe Homes and Safe Spaces; to dignify women and girls; to inspire equal opportunities for all.
