Austal USA has launched the construction of a new submarine module production center in Mobile, Alabama, to further support the US Navy’s submarine programs.
The future indoor facility will support the US Navy’s plan to obtain one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines annually, according to the company.
It will encompass 369,600 square feet (34,337 square meters) at the site and incorporate a material storage area, machine shops, assembly area, and improved waterfront capabilities for the logistics of completed modules via barge.
“Austal USA is committed to supporting national security initiatives like the Navy’s Virginia and Columbia-class submarine programs, evidenced by our aggressive infrastructure and workforce expansion efforts,” Austal USA President Michelle Kruger stated.

‘Major’ Shipbuilding Investment
Austal noted that the submarine module factory construction is part of a larger investment to expand the organization’s role in US defense and “as a major contributor to Alabama’s economy.”
For the effort, Austal began other infrastructure work in Mobile for a final assembly station that will support developments of the US Navy and Coast Guard surface vessels, particularly the Offshore Patrol Cutters and the TAGOS-25 ocean surveillance systems, as well as renovation of the firm’s waterfront yard.
Upon completion, Austal’s overall expansion plan will produce about 1.5 million square feet (139,354 square meters) of indoor area which will add to the company’s existing 180 acres (73 hectares) of facilities in the city.
