A delegation from Burkina Faso, including the prime minister, Kyélem de Tambèla, arrived in Russia on Tuesday to attend the three days, Burkina Faso Economic Days Forum.

So far during his visit, a number of deals have been proposed including a renewable energy deal between Russia’s Rosatom and the government of Burkina Faso, as stated by Rosatom.

“Nikolay Spassky, Deputy Director General for International Relations of the Rosatom, held a meeting with Yacouba Zabre Gouba, Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries of Burkina Faso. The delegation arrived in Moscow to participate in the forum ‘Economic Days of Burkina Faso in Russia’,” Rosatom’s statement reads.

As the name implies, the event is specifically designed to foster discussions on partnerships between Russia and Burkina Faso, particularly economic deals outside of weapons trade.

As reported by the Russian newspaper Sputnik, during the meeting, “a detailed ‘synchronization of watches’ took place on the current and promising agenda of bilateral cooperation,” and the development of nuclear infrastructure, the widespread adoption of nuclear energy, as well as training Burkina Faso students in nuclear and related specialties were on the agenda.

“The vision of joint projects in the field of renewable energy was also discussed,” Rosatom stated.

In March 2024, Burkina Faso and Rosatom touted being in the process of signing a road map to build a nuclear reactor in the West African country.

Then the deal was made public by Burkina Faso’s energy minister.

The nuclear agreement dates back to October of last year, when the Russian business signed a memorandum of understanding with Burkina Faso to develop a nuclear power plant in the West African country.
