Nigerian Army operating Oshkosh logistics vehicles

Oshkosh M1070 8×8 tractor

Oshkosh M1070 8×8 tractor, a vehicle not previously seen in the NA inventory, was displayed at this year’s Nigerian Army Day celebrations (NADCEL 2024).

The M1070 is utilized as a prime mover to transport, deploy, and recover main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery, armored bulldozers, and various other heavy vehicles and equipment.

The original M1070 is powered by a Detroit Diesel 8V-92TA 12.06-liter diesel engine with 500 hp at 2100 rpm and 1993 Nm torque at 1200 rpm. This is coupled to an Allison CLT-754 five-speed automatic transmission and Oshkosh 55000 two-speed transfer case. The M1070A1 is powered by a Caterpillar C-18 six-cylinder diesel with 700 hp. This is coupled to an uprated Allison 4800SP seven-speed automatic transmission and Oshkosh 30000 single-speed transfer case.

The Nigerian Army also received Oshkosh M1083 MTV 5-ton 6×6 utility trucks. These were seen in North Eastern Maiduguri providing relief and rescue to displaced people during the recent flooding in the region.

The M1083 Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV) is the standard 5 ton 6×6 drop side cargo truck variant of the FMTV (Family of Medium Tactical Vehicle) series of US trucks.

It is powered by a Caterpillar® C7 heavy-duty diesel 6 cylinder
electronically controlled fuel injected
turbocharged and after cooled engine.

The logistics vehicles is equipped with a 7 speed Allison® MD 3700 SP automatic/select transmission.

It is not yet certain when the Nigerian Army acquired the type of in what quantity, however, it will enhance the service logistical capacity during military operations.

In Africa, Oshkosh Defense has exported the type to Morocco, Egypt, and Djibouti.
