Your Guide: Why Did I Get $20 Cash on My EBT Card?

Are you currently facing financial setbacks and have you found yourself entering the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)? Listen, no judgment here. Sometimes times do get tough and it’s smart of you to seek out all public assistance in a time of need.

If you’re like most and check your balance regularly, you might have noticed a random deposit. This has left some people asking, “Why did I get $20 cash on my EBT card?” Today, we’re going to discover why this could have been applied to your account and cover what you can use your benefit card on.

Keep reading to find out more.

What are the EBT and Snap benefits?

First, let’s tackle what exactly we’re talking about here. SNAP (aka the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) helps people who are going through a financial setback buy food. The benefits (aka the money) are distributed through what’s called an EBT card.

EBT stands for “electronic benefits transfer.” People also refer to this as a food stamp. This program helps many low-income people be able to support their families in the hopes that they can get out of their financial situation.

Next, let’s tackle what exactly this extra $20 cash benefit could be for. When it comes to SNAP, several additional assistance programs could have been applied for. For example, there is what’s called a “heat and eat” benefit.

For example, residents of California who are on snap may qualify for this extra payment to help pay for energy costs.

Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Second, another way that this mysterious $20 may have been applied to your account is through the Home Energy Assistance Program.

So, for example, let’s say that you require help when it comes to paying for utilities and turned to the LIHEAP program. This could be another instance in which the benefit was added to your account.

How do I use the cash benefit?

Now, how exactly should you be able to use the cash? The safe bet would be to use the benefit just as you would with your other SNAP benefits. So, are you going to be able to use this on random household items outside of your utility bill? Probably not. Y

ou always want to keep a good hand on what you are using your funds for so that you don’t get disqualified from your benefits. So, keeping a good record and keeping receipts of your purchases are probably going to be best.

What can you use your EBT card for?

Again, you will occasionally find some gas stations that will accept EBT. However, not for the purchase of gas or other non-food items. Remember, you can only use your EBT card on eligible food items.

What can you not use SNAP on? Anything that is a nonfood item. For example, if you have a dog, unfortunately, you cannot use SNAP on the dog for any pet food. Nor can you use it on paper products, vitamins, grooming items, cosmetic soaps and shampoos, or medicines. So, you will need to plan accordingly.

Snap is meant to be used on the following items:

  • Non-alcoholic beverages
  • Dairy Items
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Fruits Veggies
  • Cereal and bread items

Conclusion

In conclusion, now that you have a decent understanding of how this additional $20 credit hits your account, you now have to be wise about how you use it. Does this mean you can just go blow it on gambling or drinks?

No, of course not, but you knew that. However, if you need that additional $20 to go towards groceries or your actual utility bills, now is the time to take advantage of that. Remember, you totally get this!
