Speaking diring the forum, Ethiopia’s Safaricom CEO Wim Vanhelleputte said “Unlike Kenya, where M-PESA revolutionized money transfers 18 years ago, Ethiopia faces a different challenge, finding and developing different use cases for mobile money payments. While significant strides have been made, the journey is still ongoing, and M-PESA is at the heart of this transformation, driving financial inclusion and digital payments adoption.”

“We will embrace the experience and learning from Safaricom plc’s M-PESA super app. We don’t have to go the steady legacy route as we have the opportunity to leapfrog.” He added

Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted that “Despite the challenges posed by hyperinflation, macroeconomic factors and an evolving political landscape, we are encouraged by the progress made at a national level. Like many other economies in emerging and frontier markets, the economy in Ethiopia remains promising with significant business opportunities.”

Safaricom’s investor day forum is part of the company’s efforts to engage with its business partners and stakeholders about its operations, strategies, and impact.
