A total of three European countries are actively aspiring to join the BRICS alliance in 2025. The bloc is looking lucrative to countries from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa as they are the only ones challenging the US dollar’s supremacy. No other alliance is openly taking on the White House policies than the 10-member group.

Turkey had applied for BRICS membership in September 2024 despite being a member of the NATO, but the country is not part of the European Union (EU). Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan referring to BRICS said, “we are interested but we have not been offered a membership yet.” Despite repeated attempts, Turkey is yet to be accepted as a member or partner country of the alliance.

It includes human rights abuses, silencing dissent, and helping Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Serbia was the first European country to openly express interest to join the BRICS alliance. It formally sent its application to be a part of the bloc in 2023 and is awaiting membership. However, Serbia has been invited to BRICS forums and take part in discussions as it grapples with EU challenges. Serbia’s association with Russia is making EU nations uneasy leading to strained relationship among neighboring nations.
