The knockout stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup is taking shape with just one group left to play its final matches and the bracket to crown a champion is almost set. So far, surprises have not been in short supply with reigning Olympic champions Canada and former finalist Brazil going out in group play. The Americans were the pre-tournament favorites but, after finishing second in Group E and failing to impress in any match, England has taken over the top spot in the odds.
Spain vs. Switzerland will open the knockout stage on Saturday, followed by Norway vs. Japan. The Americans will play in the early morning on Sunday, against Sweden.

Round of 16
Switzerland vs. Spain
1 a.m. Saturday on FS1
Spain got a wake-up call in a 4-0 loss to Japan to finish Group C as the runner-up. The Spaniards are heavy favorites to advance from this match despite showing major defensive issues against the Japanese. Spain is one of the favorites in the betting odds, but has never won a knockout stage match at a World Cup.
Netherlands vs. South Africa
10 p.m. Saturday on FOX
South Africa’s first World Cup is already one to remember. The surprise win against Italy was Banyana Banyana’s first in a World Cup and got the team to this match. On top of that, the matches have been entertaining. Both teams scored in all three of South Africa’s group matches, something no other nation can say.
South Africa may be fun and dangerous in the attack, but the Netherlands is likely to punish South Africa’s attacking nature. South Africa is the biggest underdog of the Round of 16.
Japan vs. Norway
4 a.m. Saturday on FS1
Japan got through Group C with three shutout wins, 11 goals scored and an impressive 4-0 romp against Spain. Japan, the 2011 champions, has emerged as one of the favorites despite coming in with modest pre-tournament expectations. This is a meeting of two previous World Cup champions with Norway having won in 1995.
Norway’s Ada Hegerberg missed the group stage finale against New Zealand due to injury. Her status isn’t yet clear for this match.
Sweden vs. USA
5 a.m. Sunday on FOX
These teams weren’t supposed to meet this early, but the Americans have not been sharp so far. There’s plenty of history at major tournaments between these two teams. It’s the seventh time they’ve met at a World Cup, including each of the last five.
The odds have this as the most evenly balanced Round of 16 match.
Australia vs. Denmark
6:30 a.m. Monday on FS1
Australia has been on a roller coaster so far this World Cup. Finding out Sam Kerr would miss the first two matches was a blow, but the Matildas managed to beat Ireland in the opener without her. A surprising loss to Nigeria followed, making things tight for the group finale against Canada. Kerr still didn’t play, but the Matildas had one of the more impressive performances of the tournament in a 4-0 rout.
Kerr still hasn’t played in this World Cup due to a calf injury, but she wasn’t needed against Canada. Will Kerr play against Denmark? Australia is favored even with Kerr’s status up in the air.
France vs. Group H runner-up
7 a.m. Tuesday on FS1
England vs. Nigeria
3:30 a.m. Monday on FS1
England labored through 1-0 wins against Haiti and Denmark, but blew the doors open in a 6-1 win against China to close out group play. Key injuries before the tournament took the shine off what was one of the pre-tournament favorites. However, after getting all nine points in the group stage and seeing the U.S. and Germany struggle through group play, England once again looks like a major threat to win the World Cup.
