15 Brightest Minds In Cybersecurity Honored At National Bootcamp
Bridging The Cybersecurity Skills Gap
The Ministry of ICDE, the Communications Authority of Kenya, and Huawei honored 15 university students in the annual Cybersecurity Bootcamp.
The bootcamp aims to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap and combat rising cyber threats. It trains students through self-study, live training, and onsite training.
This year, 3,378 students enrolled in the self-study phase. A total of 578 advanced to live training and earned the globally recognized HCIA-Security certification.
The top 15 students attended a two-day advanced hands-on training and a three-day study tour in Nairobi.
They represented 11 counties, with six female participants.
Industry Leaders Emphasize the Importance of Cybersecurity
David Mugonyi, CEO of the Communications Authority, stressed the urgency of cybersecurity preparedness.
He highlighted the need for public-private collaboration to enhance cyber resilience.
Mugonyi reaffirmed CA’s commitment to a safe digital space. He emphasized their partnership with Huawei to equip young Kenyans with vital cybersecurity skills.
Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO, Steven Zhang, praised the collaboration. He committed to supporting Kenya with secure solutions and further cybersecurity training for various stakeholders.
Kenya faces rising cyberattacks on government and private sectors, highlighting the need for skilled ICT professionals to mitigate risks.
Mugonyi noted the increasing bootcamp applications. He emphasized the growing demand for market-relevant cybersecurity training among ICT students.
Michael Kamau, Head of Huawei’s ICT Academy, highlighted the bootcamp’s success since 2022. He noted its role in preparing professionals and connecting them with industry opportunities.

Brandistone Mabeya, a Computer Science student at Machakos University, shared her experience. Inspired by a 2024 conference, she pursued cybersecurity and joined the Huawei Community Club.
Chrispin Oguna, a cybersecurity instructor at Zetech University, praised the bootcamp’s hands-on approach. He highlighted its role in preparing students for real-world cybersecurity challenges.
In February, Huawei https://www.huawei.com/ke/ and the Communications Authority of Kenya launched the 2025 Cybersecurity Bootcamp Competition.
The initiative, aligned with World Safer Internet Day, targets university students nationwide.
