As a job seeker, do you find yourself ignoring things like mission statements while job hunting? Depending on your desired career direction and choices, the mission statements of most organisations can be a great pointer especially when they align with your career goals. This can help you make more desirable career decisions.

In simple terms, the mission statements of companies tell you where they want to go while their vision statements refer to how they plan to get there. As a job-seeker, aligning these desired goals with the specific action(s) to help you achieve them will help you understand what growth opportunities currently exist in the organisation or will be available to you in the near future.

If a company’s mission statement does not align with your career choices, then it does not benefit your career progression in the long run.

If you carelessly go-ahead to make a decision without factoring this in, such a move has a strong tendency to lead you into a stagnated career. Mission statements also say a lot about a company’s people culture.

It’s important to be proactive about your job search and career progression. Stumbling in and out of roles for companies whose mission statements do not align with your career path can be easily avoided by dedicating time to become familiar with the mission statements of the different organisations you come across.
